Contactless miniaturised temperature logger
Its small dimensions (16.5 mm x 7 mm), easy operation and reduced cost make it especially suited for setting up large networks of environmental loggers.
It has a battery lifespan of 2 yrs sampling every hour, and the memory can store ~20K readings at 0.1 ºC resolution.
It has non-volatile memory, meaning that data can be read even after battery is depleted.
It can be supplied naked or fully waterproofed - biomimetic casings with or without real shells are available.
EnvLoggers use Near Field Communication technology (NFC) to talk to a a smartphone via a dedicated Android app, freely available here.
The app makes mission deployment and servicing quick and easy. It was specifically designed with clarity and reliability in mind. Graphics have high contrast to improving readability in adverse lighting conditions, and menus are designed to minimize any possibility of accidental data loss. Missions can be started immediately or at a later date. It outputs CSV files, easily imported into R, MatLab, Excel or similar. Data are easily shared via e-mail.
Eight channel heart beat logger
This is a standalone instrument that works independently from a PC, thus can be deployed in the field. It can record the cardiac frequency of 8 animals simultaneously. Mission parameters are supplied via a plain CSV file in an SD card.
It uses infra-red (IR) sensors that are glued on the shell of molluscs or crustaceans. The latest version features LEDs which assist the placement of the IR sensors directly over the heart of the animals being monitored.
As it relies on non-invasive technology, it is harmless and can be used on live animals, providing on-the-fly data on their physiological performance.
The output data in CSV format can be easily imported into R, Matlab or Excel. It has virtually no memory limitation.
Triaxial acceleration logger
A 30 Hz tri-axial accelerometer/ magnetometer logger (codename Trident) capable of recording 3D body movements and environmental parameters, such as temperature and dissolved oxygen, is being developed. The tag also contains an in-built GPS transmitter for physical retrieval at the surface after pop-off and induction rechargeable batteries.
This instrument passed the prototyping phase and is now under intensive testing.
